Alternatives to Breast Implants for Augmentation: Fat Transfer vs. Hyaluronic Acid Gel Injections

Plastic surgery in Los Angeles is always popular and breast augmentation is one of the most popular physical enhancement surgeries available.

Plastic surgery in Los Angeles is always popular and breast augmentation is one of the most popular physical enhancement surgeries available. The debate still rages over which is the best breast implant; silicone implants or saline implants? Into the fray steps two new contestants: Macrolane injections and fat transfer. Doctor Simon Ourian, Medical Director of Epione, located in Beverly Hills, the exclusive shopping, restaurant and hotel enclave in Los Angeles, California is currently examining these two new methods of breast augmentation in Beverly Hills.Macrolane is a gel that adds volume to body tissue. It can be used to fill in concave deformities and scars, and works just as well to add roundness to small or flat breasts. The results are immediate and long lasting without needing costly and time consuming plastic surgery. Macrolane itself is a stabilized version of hyaluronic acid, the same chemical that helps form cartilage in the body. According to its manufacturer Macrolane is a pure, non-animal based gel. The results of Macrolane injection treatment are immediate and long lasting but not permanent; typically results last up to 12 months at which point a re-treatment is necessary to maintain the aesthetic results. After a local anesthetic is applied, Macrolane is injected into the problem areas. Results are immediate; the patient can see a noticeable difference in breast augmentation before and after the procedure. Also, there are a number of advantages to using Macrolane instead of permanent breast implants. These include the use of non foreign materials, the use of local instead of general anesthesia, and the swift healing rate. For more than 100 years plastic surgeons have used fat transfers to fill in scars, sunken eyes and hallowed cheeks. It is not uncommon today for plastic surgeons to use the fat transfer method to augment the buttocks, hands and bicep and triceps muscles of the upper arms. And of course, some physicians are using a patient’s own fat to augment their breasts. Fat transfer injects fat into the areas that need contouring and shaping, such as breasts and buttocks. The fat is removed from other areas of the body and injected into the problem area, then gently massaged into place. The process is usually done around three times in order to fully correct the problem. Since the fat comes from the body, there is very little chance of the body rejecting the filler. It is an outpatient procedure with a short recovery time.Dr. Ourian's Epione Medical Corporation, located in Beverly Hills Golden Triangle, is among the most comprehensive and state-of-the-art laser and aesthetic surgery centers. Dr. Ourian has been a pioneer for laser technology and non-invasive aesthetic procedures including Restylane, Botox, Juvéderm, Radiesse and Sculptra. These treatments are used for correction or reversal of a variety of conditions such as acne, acne scars, acne scar removal, skin discoloration, lip enhancement, wrinkles, stretch marks, varicose veins, cellulite, and tens of others. Laser hair removal and laser tattoos are offered too. Epione also carries Dr. Ourian’s Signature Series skin care products. For further information please contact 888-951-3377.

Epione Laser Breast Lift Poised to Lead Breast Enhancement Trends

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — As advanced technology ushers in a new era in aesthetic procedures, Epione Medical Corporation continues to provide revolutionary new options for men and women seeking alternatives to common surgeries. Recently, the company introduced its trademark laser breast lift, a non-surgical breast enhancement procedure that firms and lifts the skin. Utilizing the CoolBeam laser, available exclusively at Epione’s Beverly Hills’ offices, the procedure eliminates undesirable sagging and delivers long-lasting results.“Breast enhancement procedures are a highly popular option for women who want to turn back the hands of time, improve self-esteem and reclaim their sexuality,” said Dr. Simon Ourian, medical director of Epione Medical Corporation. “Epione’s laser breast lift is ideal for women in their thirties or older who experience sagging or heavy breasts, and want an improved appearance without the invasiveness of surgery.”

Revolutionary Non-surgical Laser Breast Enhancement Procedure Offers Safe, Long-Lasting Alternative to Surgery

In 2009, breast enhancement outpaced all other cosmetic surgeries, according to recent data released by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. However, while breast enhancement surgeries remain popular, many women still worry about scarring, loss of sensation, recovery time and other complications often associated with breast surgery. Epione’s laser breast lift, a revolutionary alternative that does not require a scalpel, eliminates common concerns, while successfully eliminating the damage done by gravity, age, pregnancy and other factors.During the laser breast lift procedure, the laser light is absorbed by water in the skin cells around the breast tissue, removing extra tissue and tightening the collagen fibers in the surrounding skin. With each treatment, the skin appears softer and firmer, resulting in a more youthful appearance. While the level of discomfort and pain varies for each patient, some temporary swelling and redness should be expected in the first few days after the procedure. Over-the-counter medication is typically sufficient to alleviate discomfort, however alternative pain relief may be recommended. After the procedure, most patients are able to return to work the following day.“We are committed to providing our patients with cutting-edge, age-defying solutions that help them feel more confident, attractive and more in control of the aging process,” said Dr. Ourian. “Schedule an appointment to come in and discuss how we can help you look and feel younger and more vital. With our advanced technology and trademark innovation, your options are endless.”

Is Acne Seasonal?

Eye woman eyebrow eyes lashes. Close up view. Isolated on white.

Skin concerns are prominent among people of all age, sizes, and looks. Keeping up with skincare routines can certainly be a task, and it isn’t uncommon to suffer from acne and other irritating conditions. Many patients fear acne due to the appearance it can give the skin; the red spots and blotches can take a hit to someone’s self-confidence depending on its severity. At Epione, we understand how serious skin concerns can be. And when it comes to acne, we want to provide the most accurate and up-to-date information possible to help you gain control over your skin and your looks. Our friendly staff has done some research to answer a common question: Is acne seasonal? To learn more about acne treatment in Los Angeles, contact Dr. Ourian today.

What is Seasonal Acne?

Seasonal acne is defined as a type of acne that can improve or worsen during certain seasons in a very regular pattern. Most types of seasonal acne are so accurate that they can often be marked on a calendar; the second a certain season begins, the acne will either get better or worse. The changing months can often bring about a surprising and annoying round of acne for anyone dealing with skin problems. While seasonal acne is most likely to affect teenagers, any person can be seen with this condition. While seasonal acne can be unpredictable, and can appear for no apparent reason, there are other contributing factors which may influence the likelihood to contract seasonal acne.

What Factors Can Influence Seasonal Acne?

Seasonal acne, which can affect someone in the winter, summer, or fall seasons, can come about for a variety of reasons. While it’s genetic for some, it could be due to a variety of environmental factors for others. Some of the reasons why seasonal acne may occur:● Lack of sleep● Stress● Lack of daily hygiene routine● Buildup of dry skin● Dryness due to central heating units in the home● New products applied to the skin or hair● The wearing of too many scarves and hatsWearing certain clothing or products can cause the skin to become much more oily than usual, which is usually a catalyst for seasonal acne to occur. Seasonal acne can affect someone who is stressed, or whose skin is undergoing unfamiliar changes in certain environmental conditions.

How Can Seasonal Acne be Treated?

When you experience acne flare-ups, there are a variety of things you can do to treat this acne. Depending on how severe the acne is, and what caused it in the first place, there are steps you can take that will treat the skin and allow the acne to subside. You can opt for gentle cleansers and exfoliating products to help your skin rid itself of the oil and dirt that gets trapped in the pores. That way, not only can you treat existing acne, but you can prevent acne from building up altogether.Make sure to wash your face with warm, soapy water more often. You can do this in the shower or sink, and it only takes a few minutes. You’ll instantly feel better with a refreshing wash, and your skin will be free from the threat of blemishes or breakouts.

The Psychological Benefits of Cosmetic Surgery

Happy blonde mature woman sitting outdoor and thinking. Senior woman relaxing on a wooden bench under the tree in a summer day. Portrait of middle aged woman smiling and daydreaming.

Many people walk into a cosmetic surgeon’s office hoping to walk out better looking, and happier for it. But will a fuller bust or smaller nose really make your life better? Research suggests yes. Having other people view you in a more attractive light has no impact on your happiness. But if you perceive yourself as more attractive, you will be happier. What matters most is your feelings – no matter what anybody else thinks you look like. For a more in depth look at your options for cosmetic surgery, including a face lift in Los Angeles, contact Dr. Ourian today to get on the road to a soaring self-image.“One recent study revealed benefits across a wide range of outcomes, including anxiety, social phobia, depression, body dysmorphia, goal attainment, life satisfaction, mental and physical health, self-efficacy, and self-esteem.” (1) Breast augmentation and reduction were most strongly associated with greater self-esteem and social confidence.

Cosmetic Surgery in the Digital Age

A positive self-image may be more important than ever in the digital age, when social media and selfies demand that you look your best around the clock, and at a moment’s notice. In fact, there has been a recent rise in young people seeking cosmetic surgery, so much so that the phenomenon has been dubbed the “Facebook Facelift.” Younger people (30 and under) are also getting more noninvasive treatments such as Botox and facial fillers. The effects of cosmetic surgery are not short-lived. Psychologists who tested patients 12 months after surgery exhibited the same signs of improved self-confidence.

Setting Realistic Expectations

Realistic expectations are crucial to getting the boost in self-confidence that you are seeking from your cosmetic surgery procedure. Patients who went into surgery expecting to come out looking perfect and have all their problems solved were, not surprisingly, disappointed with the results. Further, these patients did not experience much improved quality of life after surgery because they expected the surgery to change them into a completely new person.Patients who reported a desire for enhanced appearance and to simply feel better about themselves were much more likely to experience improved self-image and overall happiness. So, make sure you are having surgery for the right reasons, and that you know what you are getting into before you commit.

Setting a Plan

You are more likely to be satisfied with your cosmetic surgery results if you meet with your surgeon for sufficient consultations beforehand to make sure that you agree on a plan for your surgery. Your surgeon can take measurements, take photographs, and show you before and after examples of past patients so that you can cement your plans for how you want to look post-surgery.

Cosmetic Surgery and Depression

A study by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons came up with some interesting results about cosmetic surgery and depression. Among the sample group of plastic surgery patients, antidepressant use decreased by 31% after a six month follow up appointment. This shows how important body image can be to our psychological well-being, and how big of an impact plastic surgery can have on repairing a negative body image.

A Domino Effect

A boost in self- esteem can have far reaching effects in your life. You may experience increased success in romantic relationships, employment status, and assertiveness in every aspect of life due to your newfound confidence. You can stand taller and dress more fashionably – who knows where that will lead you?

A Word on Reconstructive Surgery

Cosmetic surgery can be divided into two categories – aesthetic and reconstructive. So far, we have been discussing aesthetic surgeries – that is, voluntary surgeries undergone to enhance appearance. People also undergo reconstructive plastic surgery – that is, craniofacial surgery, hand surgery, microsurgery, and the treatment of burns. These surgeries aim to repair a part of the body or improve its functioning, and unlike aesthetic surgeries, are not solely cosmetic. It should be obvious that these reconstructive surgeries have a profound positive impact on patient’s lives. However, when discussing the psychological effects of plastic surgery on self-esteem, etc., most of the research refers to aesthetic or cosmetic procedures.

Health Tips for Keeping the Fat Off After Surgery

Beautiful woman on exercise bike in her private gym

You may have undergone weight loss surgery to take off those stubborn last few pounds after a significant weight loss (for example, liposuction or cellulaze.) Or, you may have had a surgery geared towards major weight loss, such as bariatric surgery (i.e. lap band surgery.) In either case, after your surgery you will naturally be concerned about maintaining your new physique by keeping the fat off. Here are our best tips for doing so.For more information about receiving cosmetic surgery in Los Angeles, contact Dr. Simon Ourian and the experts at Epione Beverly Hills.

Eat with Health in Mind

Try out new, healthier foods one at a time to see if they are to your liking or if you can adjust to eating them.1. Avoid Consuming a Lot of Sugar and FatTry to avoid pre-packaged and processed foods as much as possible. If you do eat these products, read labels and buy only the ones that have a protein to calorie ratio of 10:1 or better. Cut out fried food, candy, and all sweetened dairy products such as ice cream and flavored yogurts. Go for the sugar-free versions.2. Eat a High Protein, Low Fat DietEmphasize fish, dairy, meat, beans, and other legumes. You can also focus your meals around lean chicken, lean turkey, or tofu.3. Eat Plenty of Fresh Fruits and VegetablesFruit makes a great snack. During meals, finish your protein first, then go for the veggies. The best options include potatoes, carrots, green beans, tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, bananas, and avocados.4. Eat Smaller MealsObviously, consuming fewer calories will help keep your weight down. But also, your body burns calories more efficiently if they are consumed in smaller portions. With this in mind, plan about 5 small meals evenly spaced throughout the day, and avoid snacking as much as you can. Do not eat after 8pm. Pay attention to how your body feels – it may take 15-20 minutes after you’re finished eating to feel “full.”5. Drink WaterFirst, choosing to drink water over all other caloric and sugary drinks helps you keep weight off. Moreover, you need to drink a lot of water (aim for at least 64oz. per day) to help your body flush out all the waste products and toxins that present themselves after weight loss. Water also keeps your stomach feeling full, which helps you not to snack and stick to your regular, 5-meal schedule.

Stay Physically and Mentally Active

Your surgeon will probably recommend that you start moving 48 hours after your surgery. But this does not mean you can sign up for an aerobics class! You must take it easy for the first three weeks, listening to your body’s signals about when you’ve had enough for the day and need to rest.1. Commit to an Exercise ProgramAfter three weeks have passed, try to exercise about four days a week for 30 minutes at a time. Exercise not only sends endorphins to your brain, making you feel better, but it also burns fat and builds lean muscle, maintaining the sleek results of your surgery. If you’re not in the mood for a full workout, walking outdoors can be a gentler way to boost your mood and burn some calories at the same time.2. Weigh Yourself WeeklyKeeping tabs on your numerical weight helps boost motivation. If you are staying on track, it increases satisfaction with the good job you are doing. If you notice that the numbers are creeping up, you can correct yourself quickly and refocus on cooking healthy meals or rededicating yourself to your exercise routine.3. Occupy Your MindFind activities besides eating that make you happy, and continuously add to that list. Paint, draw, listen to your favorite music, take up an instrument, or start attending a weekly game night. Satisfy your mind, not your stomach.

Get Support

1. See a NutritionistA nutritionist or dietician can help you create a personalized healthy diet plan that is doctor approved.2. See a PsychologistOn top of the physical stress, you are going through a lot of mental stress after your surgery and adjusting to your new lifestyle. You can talk to a psychologist about any issues that are impeding your progress, and she can give you stress relief tips, so you don’t feel the urge to stress-eat.3. Explain Your New Lifestyle to Friends and Loved OnesIf your social life revolves around food, you will need to be the one who comes up with innovative ideas for gatherings. You may find that you need to see people with unhealthy habits less often. Your new lifestyle is an adjustment for the people in your life as well. They may even become jealous of the improvements you have made. Be prepared to discuss what you are doing with the people you care about.

Breast Lift vs. Breast Augmentation

thinking woman with nerd glasses. white background

For many years, breast augmentation (implants) has been the number one cosmetic surgery procedure. It is not surprising considering the society we live in and the emphasis it places on a large, feminine bosom. However, augmentation is not the only breast procedure to consider if you are unhappy with the size, shape, or slope of your breasts. A breast lift is another option to consider, depending on what goals you would like to achieve.Ultimately, you must consult with a board certified cosmetic surgeon for your cosmetic surgery in Beverly Hills, such as Simon Ourian, MD at Epione to determine which surgery is right for you. Here is a breakdown and comparison of these two types of surgery.

Breast Lifts – Who Needs One?

Breast ptosis, or drooping, occurs as women age, lose a significant amount of weight, or bear children. It is caused by loss of breast volume. A breast lift corrects the drooping by volumetrically reshaping the breasts. To determine if you may be a candidate for a breast lift at home, try the pencil test: If you can place a pencil under the fold of your breast, and it stays there when you take your hands away, you are a candidate. If your nipple falls below the pencil line, then you are an especially good candidate.

Types of Breast Lifts

There are three types of breast lift surgeries that doctors use for patients with minimal, moderate, and maximal drooping.• For patients with minimal drooping, doctors use a periareolar breast reduction technique. An incision follows the natural shape of the areola and excess skin is removed.• For patients with moderate drooping, doctors use the vertical breast reduction incision approach. The incision follows the same path around the areola, but then extends down vertically below the areola, allowing for a greater lift.• For patients with maximal drooping, doctors use the inverted-T incision approach. This follows the same path as the first two types of breast lift surgeries; however, the incision extends along the breast fold. This is the most common, most predictable, and most extensive kind of breast lift.

Breast Augmentation- Who Needs It?

Breast augmentation, also known as enlargement or implants, is often desired by women who have naturally smaller breasts. This procedure is also used in cases of mastectomy, when breast tissue must be replaced or enhanced to restore a natural look. When considering breast augmentation, there are the major areas that need to be considered including placement of the incision, implant size/shape, and type of implant.

Incision and Implant Placement

The three most common incisions for breast augmentation are inframammary (under the fold of the breast), trans-axillary (in the armpit), or periareolar (around the nipple). Each has its advantages and disadvantages, and you should discuss these and your preferences with your doctor before surgery.

Implant Size and Shape

Considerations such as your chest wall shape, your body form, your lifestyle, your natural foundation and your goals must be addressed when selecting implant size and shape. You must discuss all of these things with your cosmetic surgeon before undergoing your procedure. Your cosmetic surgeon will also have the experience to make recommendations about proportionality so that your new breasts look natural.

Implant Type: Silicone vs. Saline

The type of implant you choose depends on multiple factors including personal preference and body type. Both types of implants last 10-15 years, are FDA approved, and have excellent safety records.• Silicone implants are more expensive, require a larger incision and a more involved surgical procedure. They have a more realistic feel and for that reason they are the better choice for patients with very little natural breast tissue.• Saline implants add volume and shape without necessarily changing the feel of the breasts. These are suitable for patients with ample breast tissue.

Breast Lift or Breast Augmentation, or Both?

A breast lift focuses on breast position but will not increase the size of your bosom. A breast augmentation focuses on the size and shape of the breast but will not correct drooping breasts. If you desire all of these results at once, you may elect to have both procedures performed at the same time. This is known as an augmentation/pexy, a combination surgery which will give you upper breast fullness while repositioning sagging breasts and nipple areas.

What are the Worst Foods for Acne?

Beautiful young smiling woman hand touch her face and mouth lips teeth. Isolated over white background model is a asian girl

You remember the rumors going around the halls of your high school:“Eating pizza will give you a pizza face!”“Chocolate will only give you pimples…”“French Fries are the worst for your skin!”Well, it turns out there is a nugget of truth in these myths. You may be taken aback by the foods that made our list of the worst choices for acne. They include dairy, nuts, and – surprise! – sushi. We also included a bonus list of some little-known acne healing foods at the end of the article. For more information on acne scar removal in Los Angeles and which cosmetic procedures can benefit you, Contact Epione in Beverly Hills today.

Worst Foods for Acne

Chocolate

Until just recently, the idea that chocolate causes acne was considered a simple myth among scientists. However, in 2013 a small study from the Netherlands was published connecting chocolate to skin changes resulting in acne. As it turns out, eating chocolate causes inflammation. Plus, chocolate lowers the body’s defenses against microorganisms, so bacteria can infect pimples and worsen them.

Pizza

Here is another rumor that has been proven true. Eating simple carbohydrates causes acne. These are high-glycemic foods that cause spikes in your blood sugar, because the sugars are quickly digested and then dumped into your bloodstream all at once. The resulting high blood sugar causes hormonal changes and inflammation that leads to acne.

French Fries

Yes, this one is true as well. When you eat greasy, high fat foods like French fries, the foods travel down the digestive system to be broken down and used for energy. But high-in-saturated-fat fries can lead to hormonal reactions which cause acne.

Sushi

We’ve already established that high glycemic foods can contribute to acne breakouts. This is because they encourage an inflammatory response, in turn triggering the release of acne-promoting hormones. Well, did you know that there is a glycemic index that rates foods according to their effect on your blood sugar? There is, and a rating of 20 and above is considered a high-glycemic food. On this scale, sushi rice receives a 17 (which is pretty high.) So, if you are eating sushi regularly, as many of us do, you might want to consider cutting back.

Nuts

Nuts are high in protein and fat, which makes them difficult to digest. If these fats and proteins don’t properly digest, the immune system may create antibodies that inflame sebaceous glands and cause pimples.

Dairy

There is no definite link between dairy and acne, but there are theories about it. One theory is that milk contains components related to the hormone testosterone, which may stimulate oil glands in the skin, setting the stage for acne. Something to consider is that distinct kinds of dairy may affect your skin in different ways. If you find that cow’s milk causes breakouts, try yogurt or kefir. Or, you can switch to an alternative milk like goat’s milk or any number of nut milks widely available today. If cheese is a problem, try a vegan variety!

Spicy Foods

In regions where the people consume a lot of spicy foods, like South Asia and Latin America, it is a common conception that eating spicy causes acne. But is it true? Well, yes. Spicy foods often contain tomatoes and peppers, which contain acidic lycopene that can be an irritant to some people, throwing off their skin's pH levels and triggering breakouts.

What Helps Acne

A healthy, well-rounded diet and steady exercise routine will do wonders for your skin. But there are some little-known foods that are especially great if you want a pimple-free, healthy glow.

Fatty Fish

Salmon, Sardines, and Tuna all feed your body Omega-3s. They allow your skin to build new, healthy cells, making it look better. Don’t like fish? Take a fish oil pill daily. A 2012 study showed that taking fish oil helped improve the complexions of people with moderate to severe acne by controlling inflammation.

Probiotic Rich Foods

The most commonly known sources of probiotics are yogurt or kefir, but there are many non-dairy alternatives. Have you ever considered sauerkraut, miso, kimchi, or tempeh? These are all great sources of the beneficial bacteria. Research in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology shows that consuming probiotics may stymie the release of inflammatory proteins and decrease sebum production, preventing plugged pores.

Spirulina

What’s that you say? Spirulina is blue-green algae that is super nutritious and high in Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). GLA is an essential fatty acid with anti-inflammatory properties. That’s great news if you want to get rid of acne. You can find Spirulina at your local health food market. Add it to your morning smoothie, sprinkle it on your cereal, or mix it into a salad.

Top Winter Skincare Tips

The winter solstice will occur on Wednesday, December 21, 2017 at 11:28am EST. The total duration of winter 2017 is 89 days, 00 hours, and 47 minutes. You could spend all that time chapping, itching, peeling, and stinging your way through the season. Or, you could follow these simple yet brilliant tips to get glowing winter skin.

Wash in Lukewarm Water

While a hot shower or bath feels great when coming in from the cold, they strip away vitally important natural oils from the skin. Especially when washing hands and faces, stick to lukewarm water to protect your skin’s natural moisture barrier.

Use Soap Free Cleansers

Regular soap can be very harsh and drying to the skin. Whether you are cleansing your face, hands, or body, choose a gentle cream or oil based cleanser that will nourish your skin.

Exfoliate

The thin skin on your feet, hands, and elbows can get rough and callused faster than the rest of your body. Keep those and other parts smooth and ready to absorb moisturizers by exfoliating regularly. For face and hands, buy an exfoliating face wash that won’t dry out your skin. You can buy comparable products for your body, and use them with a loofah in the shower.

Moisturize Immediately After You Wash

Besides preserving your skin’s natural moisture, in winter especially, you need the additional moisture of lotions and moisturizers. Moisturizing when your skin is still damp seals the dampness into your skin, enhancing the moisture effect. Keep lotions next to every sink and shower in the house so you don’t forget, and throw a mini-tube in your purse or car so you can keep your hands smooth on the go.

Layer on the Protection

Gloves, scarves, hats, and coats can be more than warming in the winter months; they also protect your skin from the wind and the dry air. Many people also forget that the sun can be just as damaging on a cloudy day as on a sunny one, so remember to use a good sunscreen even in winter months.

Humidify

Heating systems dry out the air in your home, compounding the effect of the dry air of the season. To combat dryness, consider installing a humidifier. If you truly want to see a noticeable difference, buy a whole house humidifier. Or, if you want to humidify just one bedroom, try this Honeywell room humidifier.

Make DIY Masks

Your kitchen cabinet is full of wonderful, moisturizing ingredients which are great for treating and preventing dry skin. Honey, avocado, yogurt, olive, jojoba, and almond oils, bananas, and aloe are all good options. Pick your favorites and mix them together to make a cream or paste, and leave on the skin for 10-30 minutes.

Cucumber

Cucumbers are cooling and soothing, making them the perfect remedy for reducing redness, inflammation and puffiness. This mask is also great after spending time in the sun.Directions:Pulse cucumber in a blender and apply to face.Leave on for 5 minutes.Rinse with water.*To treat your eyes only, cut the cucumber into discs and place over the eyes.

Drink Water

Most people sip on hot drinks like cocoa and tea during the winter. While this is comforting (and acceptable,) the problem is that they forget to drink enough water. If you want a hot drink, try hot water with lemon. If you are drinking cold or room temperature water and don’t like it plain, try one of the low calorie flavored vitamin mixes available at your local supermarket.

Eat Winter Foods for Healthy Skin

We heal from the inside out, and what we put in our bodies not only gives us energy, but provides us with a powerful defense against dryness, ultraviolet damage from the sun, and wrinkles, and can promote smooth skin. Luckily, foods that are good to eat in winter are also in season this time of year. Here are some of the top choices.• Grapefruit• Coffee• Edamame• Tea• Carrots• Tuna• Broccoli• Spinach• CocoaAbout Epione Beverly Hills: Simon Ourian, M.D., is a cosmetic physician by vocation and a sculptor by avocation—but in Dr. Ourian’s mind, they are indivisible. • Hormones. Hormones are a primary cause of cellulite development. Estrogen, insulin, noradrenaline, thyroid hormones and prolactin are part of the cellulite production process. When your body produces less estrogen, it leads to poor circulation, a decrease in new collagen production and the breakdown of older connective tissue.
  • Genetics. Genes may predispose an individual to particular characteristics associated with cellulite, such as gender, race and slow metabolism.
  • Diet. Poor nutrition can increase the likelihood of cellulite production. People who eat too much fat, carbohydrates, salt, or refined and processed foods are more likely to develop cellulite.
  • Dehydration. Not getting enough water can cause toxic buildup in the fat cells that’s difficult for the body to metabolize, leading to dehydration. This causes thinner, weaker skin, which increases the visibility of cellulite. Increasing your intake of water can aid your body in metabolizing fat, ridding itself of toxins and hiding cellulite as thicker, healthier skin develops.
  • Lifestyle. Cellulite may be more prevalent in smokers, those who do not exercise, and those who sit or stand in idle positions for long periods of time. If you’re chained to a desk all day, take small breaks to stand up at your desk, walk around the office and stretch it out. The increase in blood circulation allows the body to re-balance and metabolize throughout the day.
  • Smoking Cigarettes. Cigarette smoke can reduce blood vessel flow and circulation, which weakens and disrupts the formation of collagen and skin health. This causes the connective tissue to stretch, weaken and become damaged more easily. As a result, thinner and weakened skin increase visibility of cellulite.
  • Lack of Muscle. Building up muscle will help decrease the appearance of cellulite. For the back of your legs, try hamstring curls or single leg deadlift. The purpose of increasing lean muscle mass is to decrease the appearance of cellulite.

Cellulite Prevention

A healthy lifestyle can go a long way to reduce cellulite production. Eating healthy, low fat foods such as fruits, vegetables and fiber can help. Similarly exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy weight and reducing stress are recommended to prevent cellulite. Here’s a list of 5 secret weapons to fight cellulite:• Avoid too much salt and sugar to reduce stored salt and sugar deposits in fat cells, causing them to expand.• Drink 8-10 glasses of water daily to flush out toxins.• Sprinkle flaxseed on your breakfast to boost collagen growth.• Add kelp to your diet to help the body burn fat.• Take gotu kola extract to improve elasticity, thicken skin and minimize the appearance of cellulite.

Why it’s So Important to Take Care of Yourself After Treatment

Portrait of body of attractive girl applying moisturizer on her legs. She is sitting and looking forward with pleasure. Isolated and copy space in right side

No matter which treatment option you decided to pursue — whether Botox, a chemical peel, body sculpting or cosmetic surgery — it’s extremely important to follow the after treatment guidelines in order to maintain those positive results for weeks and months to come. For more information about plastic surgery in Beverly Hills, do not hesitate to call upon the experts of Epione Beverly Hills. After investing so much time, money, and energy into a particular treatment don’t let all that go to waste by not taking care of yourself following your procedure. There are some simple things you can do to help those results last and get the most out of your plastic surgery in Beverly Hills.

5 Simple Steps

No matter your treatment, the following five simple steps will help you maintain those results. All it comes down to is making some basic lifestyle changes. Making these steps a priority will definitely go a long way to improving your life as well as maintaining those treatment results.Step One: Eat a healthy and well-balanced diet. This seems like a common sense suggestion but when life gets hectic, a healthy diet is often the first thing to go. A healthy meal is often sacrificed for the convenience of saving time by running through the drive-thru. However, maintaining a healthy and well-balanced diet will help you look and feel great. All those fruits, veggies, whole grains and lean proteins will help keep you on track and make following the other guidelines easier.Step Two: Keep your stress levels under control. Managing your stress can bring big dividends in all areas of your life. It certainly helps us to eat better and lots of uncontrolled stress can cause a variety of digestive and skin issues. You certainly don’t want to reverse all those great results you’ve just achieved so make sure you set some reasonable limits on your time and set a more realistic to-do list. It’s important to make time to do things you enjoy.Step Three: Don’t smoke. This also seems like a common sense suggestion but many people smoke in order to manage stress but we all know smoking is detrimental to our health on a variety of levels. If you’ve had a skin treatment, smoking will definitely impact the longevity of your results. Smoking actually narrows the tiny blood vessels in the outer layers of the skin, thus decreasing blood flow. The result is that your skin is depleted of much needed oxygen and nutrients. Smoking will ultimately make your skin look older and will contribute to many more wrinkles.Step Four: Avoid the sun. Protecting yourself from the sun is extremely important. Over exposure to the sun brings several health risks with it. Make sure you use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. You should also find a spot in the shade, especially between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. as this is when the sun’s rays are the strongest. Cover your skin with protective clothing such as rightly woven long-sleeved shirts, pants and wide-brimmed hats.Step Five: Be gentle with your skin. If you’ve had a successful skin treatment, there are a few things you can do to maintain those successful results. Limit the amount of time you spend in a hot bath or shower and use warm, rather that hot water, as oils from the skin can be depleted. Avoid strong soaps that can strip the oil from your skin. Use shaving cream, lotions or shave gel before shaving to keep your skin lubricated. Gently pat your skin dry so some moisture does remain on your skin. And finally, moisturize your dry skin with a product that fits your skin type and contains an SPF.

Plastic Surgery in Beverly Hills

One of the biggest reasons so many fail to maintain the results of their treatments is because they feel alone and overwhelmed at the list of do’s and don’ts. When you visit Epione Beverly Hills, you will have a partner to walk you through the follow up process every step of the way. You don’t have to take this journey alone. Schedule your consultation today!

Botox/Dysport After Treatment

Botox / Dysport After Treatment

[INSERT_ELEMENTOR id="41639"] Things to do Before the Botox/Dysport Treatment

  1. In order to avoid bruising, it is a good idea to not take any pain relievers that work by thinning your blood, such as Motrin, Tylenol, and Advil. Avoiding alcoholand other blood thinning agents (Vitamin E, fish oil, garlic, etc) for the first several days before and after treatment is recommended as well.
  2. Do not wax, tweeze, bleach, or otherwise use any hair removal product on the area that will be treated. In addition, avoid retinoids and using alpha hydroxy acids that are higher than ten percent.
  3. Botox is not recommended for you if you are breastfeeding or pregnant, allergic to any of the active ingredients, or suffer from a neurological disorder. Consulting with a doctor is important before finalizing any major decisions.
  4. Skin that has been sunburned can be difficult to treat, so avoiding sunlight is recommended before treatment. Additionally, always tell your physician about any medical conditions that you may have so as to customize an ideal treatment plan for you.

Botox and Dysport After-Treatment Instructions

  1. Bruises that occur in the treated areas after the procedure are normal.
  2. We recommend that you take 50mg of Zinc for a minimum of 5 days. Zinc is available in the vitamin section of most drugstores.
  3. Typically it can take two weeks before you see the full effects of the procedure. The human body needs time in order for muscles to lose their strength and for lines to fade after the Botox. Any range of movement is fine, as the point of the treatment is to make the appearance of lines better, and this is not always entirely dependent on the loss of muscle function underneath.
  4. Avoid lying down and leaning forward for about four hours after the treatment. This helps avoid pressuring the treated areas, which will help your muscles relax more naturally. If any small bumps or marks appear, rest assured that they typically go away after a few hours. When applying makeup within four hours of the treatment, use a gentle touch in order to avoid pressuring the area.
  5. Exercising the treated muscles for anywhere between one and two hours is recommended after treatment. Practice squinting, raising your eyebrows, or frown, as this helps work the injected fluid deeper into the muscles. This is purely supplementary, and while it may help, it will not make the areas worse if you forget to do this.
  6. Avoid rubbing the treated sections of your face for up to four hours after the treatment. Do not perform yoga or any other strenuous exercise for up to four hours. Avoid saunas and facials for up to four hours as well, as all of these will reduce the risk of raising blood pressure, which will reduce the risk of experiencing temporary bruising.
  7. The results of the treatment will typically take fourteen days before the full effect is visible. It is important to wait until the end of this time before assessing the results.
  8. Because the Botox or Dysport cosmetic procedure requires specialized techniques to customize the injections for your personal molecular structures, it is crucial to let your muscle activity recover and that your skin is not creasing during the resting period.
  9. This procedure begins as temporary at first, and you will find that the first treatment’s results initially last approximately three to four months. Maintaining a treatment plan with regular appointments will increase each following session’s lasting effects.

The Benefits of Lip Enhancement

Lip enhancements in Beverly Hills have become more and more popular in recent years. Full lips help to promote a youthful appearance, and considering the procedure is safe and relatively simple, patients are very happy with their results. There are a few different types of lip enhancement procedures, including Fat Transfer, Collagen, Dermalogen, Hyaluronic Acid and Alloderm. A new type of procedure, Laser Lip Enhancement Treatment, offers perhaps the most exciting benefits yet. With its modernized technology, this procedure offers benefits that other procedures do not.

The Benefits

Here’s a few great things that happen when you get your lips enhanced using the Laser Lip Enhancement Treatment:• Fuller lips: If you have suffered from thin lips for most of your life, then you are probably a great candidate for a lip enhancement in Beverly Hills. With a lip enhancement, your doctor will be able to add more volume to your lips and sculpt to add a fuller contour. Most clients fall in love with the results.• Corrective results: If you think your lips look uneven or crooked, a lip enhancement in Beverly Hills can help correct this. Dr. Ourian will be able to reshape your pout, making your lips look more even and voluminous.• Faster: With modern advances in lip enhancement procedures, the whole process has become faster than before. Specifically, the Laser Lip Enhancement Treatment is faster than surgical procedures. Prep time, the actual length of the procedure and after-care are all relatively short.• Smoother texture: With the Laser Lip Enhancement Treatment, your doctor will be able to smooth fine lines and wrinkles out from your lips – a key benefit offered by this procedure. Most people do not realize what a difference it makes in adding to a youthful appearance.• Less expensive: Modern advances have also made this procedure less expensive than before. The laser procedure is cheaper than other lip enhancement options.• Longer lasting results: When it comes to lip enhancement procedures, the Laser Lip Enhancement Treatment will most likely lead to longer lasting results.

The Procedure

After seeing all these benefits from a Laser Lip Enhancement Treatment, you may be wondering what happens in the treatment. Here is how your doctor will create your perfect lip shape and volume:

1. Plumping

First your doctor will inject a filler to plump up your lips. Your doctor will determine how much is necessary depending on how big you want to make your lips. The needle that is used is very thin, so only local anesthesia is needed. Most people experience little to no pain.

2. Refining

The plumping process might be repeated two to three times by your doctor if necessary. Again, this depends on how voluminous you want to make your lips.

3. Laser Treatment

In this final step, the lips are resurfaced using a laser. The laser removes fine lines to leave the texture of the lips smooth, soft and supple. While you may think that this step is unnecessary or not needed, you will be surprised at the difference the laser makes on the final results. When the laser smooths out the overall texture of the lips, it leads to the rejuvenated lines you’ve been waiting for. In addition, if the thought of using a laser scares you or makes you pause before getting the treatment, know that the laser beam penetrates to a precise, controlled depth, which makes the procedure safe and very predictable.Epione is located in the heart of Beverly Hills, CA and is a state of the art, comprehensive laser and aesthetic surgery center. The Benefits of Non-Surgical Breast Augmentation

When looking into the possibility of getting a breast augmentation, you may be worried about the complications and extra recovery time that comes along with a surgical procedure. However, did you know that you can get non-surgical breast enhancement? There are many reasons why a non-surgical breast augmentation might be the best option for you. Read on and find out!

The Process

When considering this procedure, it’s important to know how it’s done. This new wave of cosmetic treatment uses an injectable filler to enlarge and reshape breasts. The most popular filler used in this procedure commonly comes from fat removed from one part of your body through liposuction. The fat is then combined with stem cells gathered from your blood and then injected into your breasts. The stem cells help the fat assimilate to the new area in your body. With this procedure, there is no anesthesia, scalpels or recovery time. And the results tend to last for about five years.

No Extra Recovery Time or Unnecessary Complications

As with any surgery, there are operative risks for traditional breast augmentations to take into consideration, like a higher risk of infection or a reaction to anesthesia. Since you will not need to be under anesthesia for a non-surgical breast enhancement, the complications associated with full on surgery are non-existent, and there is no recovery time.

Low Chance of Rejection

The first step in this procedure to produce a filler made up of your own fat cells and stem cells. Then the concoction is injected into your breasts to reshape and enlarge them. There is little chance that your body will reject it because the filler is made up of your own fat and stem cells.

More Natural Looking Results

With traditional breast augmentation, the results can look obvious. Some women report that they look too round, too firm and generally unnatural. If you are looking for a more natural shape and feel, then this procedure might be right for you. As mentioned previously, the filler is made up of fat and stem cells, which is very similar to the tissue that already makes up your breast. So when the doctor adds this filler, the shape and feel is more natural.

Fillers are Natural

In traditional forms of a breast augmentation, a doctor will either use a saline or silicone implant. The saline implant is made up of a silicone shell filled with sterile salt water (saline). The silicone implant is a silicone shell filled with plastic gel (silicone). Both of these types of implants are obviously not naturally found in your body. The fillers in a non-surgical breast enhancement are completely natural since they are made up of your fat and stem cells. Some women like that aspect of this procedure.

Two for One

Because the doctor uses liposuction to remove fat from a part of the body and then injects it into your breast, you get two procedures for one. So if you have extra fat on your stomach, thighs, arms, etc., then just tell your doctor to remove the fat from that area.

Are you the Right Candidate?

If you are looking for the following benefits, then a non-surgical breast enhancement might be right for you:• No recovery time• No risks that are associated with full on surgery• More natural looking results• Looking for a small lift (a traditional breast augmentation will give you more dramatic results)• Low chance your body will reject the filler• No silicon or saline will be permanently placed in your bodyEpione is located in the heart of Beverly Hills, CA and is a state of the art, comprehensive laser and aesthetic surgery center. How to Identify Cancerous Moles

When you see a new mole appear on your skin, it can be easy to immediately assume the worst. However, before you start stressing that your new mole is cancerous, it is wise to learn how to identify cancerous moles from the non-cancerous ones. Remember, only your doctor can make a firm diagnosis, so make sure to consult Dr. Ourian if you are having any concerns. Finding a cancerous mole early means that skin cancer is often curable.

Learn the ABCs

When a new spot crops up on your skin or one starts to change appearances, The American Academy of Dermatology suggests to look for these signs of melanoma:• Asymmetry: If parts of the spot are very different than other parts, that can be a sign of cancer. For example, if one side is darker and raised and the other side is flat, it may be cancerous.• Border irregularity: When looking at the mole, see if the border is clearly defined and uniform. A sign that it could be cancerous is when the mole has a border that is not very defined, notched or scalloped.• Color changes: If the spot is multiple colors, then it could be a sign of cancer.• Diameter: Look at how big the width of the spot. If it’s larger than a pencil eraser, get it checked out by a doctor.• Evolving: Cancerous moles usually change over time, whether that be color, size, border, etc. For some cancerous moles, this may be the only sign that it is not benign.

Identifying a Non-Cancerous Mole

If finding a cancerous mole does not lead to any of the above symptoms, it may just a regular mole. Moles come in many shapes and sizes, and a majority of the time they are not cancerous. A non-cancerous mole will have the following characteristics:• Small, about the width of a pencil eraser• Round or oval, with a distinct edge• Even color, usually brown, tan or pink• A common mole usually begins as a flat, smooth spot that may become raised over timeAs a person ages, moles can change. They may become flatter, a different color or even disappear completely. It’s a good practice to take a picture of a mole every year so you can notice the changes. Most people have at least ten moles, and some may have up to 40.

Preventing Cancerous Moles

Ultraviolet rays, or UV rays, from the sun play a factor in how many moles a person can have. The more sun exposure a person gets, the more moles they will likely have. And the more moles you have, the more likely you have a cancerous mole. To help prevent the formation of melanoma, stay out of the sun as much as possible. When in direct sunlight, wear protective clothing, a hat and sunscreen. Tanning beds can also produce the same harmful UV rays as the sun, so stay away from those as well.

Why do we Have Moles?

Moles usually develop on a person within the first 20 years of their life; some may also appear later in life. Your skin naturally has clusters of melanocytes, skin cells, that attach to surrounding skin tissue cells. The melanocytes give your skin pigment and are spread evenly throughout the body. A mole forms when there are additional layers of melanocytes in an area. Moles are most likely a product of genetic configuration, and are determined before birth. When you see a new mole pop up on your skin or see an existing mole change shape or colors, it’s easy to think the worst. However, use the guide above to finding a cancerous mole and go see your doctor in order to determine if it is cancerous.Epione is located in the heart of Beverly Hills, CA and is a state of the art, comprehensive laser and aesthetic surgery center. The team at Epione works together to restore or create your desired appearance, and the staff is dedicated to providing their patients the highest level of care and attention. Acne Scars

What Causes Acne Scarring?

Scars from acne often seem like a double punishment. First, there’s the issue of actually dealing with the nasty pimples. Then there’s the fact that you now have marks there to remind you of the issue. Despite that fact, it is not uncommon for numerous individuals to battle acne well into their adult years. Even those who are lucky enough to experience a dramatic decline in acne related symptoms over time are still often times left with an irregular skin appearance due to the onset of acne-related scarring.Acne scars are most often the product of an inflamed lesion or blemish which occurs when the follicle, or pore, becomes engorged with excess oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. The pore goes on to swell, causing a break in the follicle wall. If the rupture occurs near the skin's surface, the lesion typically minor and will heal rather quickly. More serious lesions will arise, however, when there is a deeper break in the follicle wall and when infected material spills out into the dermis to destroy otherwise healthy skin tissue. In order to repair the damage done to the dermis, the skin goes on to form new collagen fibers that provide the skin with extra strength and flexibility. Unfortunately, the finished "repair job" hardly ever looks as smooth or flawless as before the injury.

Types of Acne Scars

There are many different types of acne, some of which are more prone to scarring than others. Blackheads, whiteheads, and other non-inflamed blemishes typically don't cause scarring because these types of lesions do not injure skin tissue. Inflammatory acne, however, such as acne cysts or nodules, are way more likely to create long-term scarring as these types of acne affect deeper layers of the skin. There’s another type of acne scarring called hypertrophic, or keloid scarring, that happens if the body produces too much collagen, resulting in the creation of a raised mass of tissue on the skin's surface. Acne also is known to lead to atrophic, or depressed, scars as well, which develop when there is a loss of tissue. Ice pick and boxcar scars are two examples of atrophic scars.Various factors can make an individual more prone to developing acne scars, such as:• Genetics: If your family has a history of acne scarring, you are more likely to also experience the issue.• Non-Treatment: Individuals who do not treat their acne sooner rather than later are more likely to scar.• Picking and Touching: Picking at acne causes trauma to the skin that is more likely to result in scarring and prolong the healing process. Case in point: DO NOT pick, prod, or even touch the skin!

Avoiding Acne Scars

To go about avoiding acne scars, there are many steps that can be taken. First and foremost, treat acne as soon as it develops because the best thing you can do is to get all acne under control quickly and effectively before it spreads further or gets worse.Next, always pass up the temptation to pick or squeeze any pimples as doing so can force debris deeper into the dermis, spreading an infection to other tissue and worsening inflammation. Picking at scabs should also be avoided because scabs are a skin's natural "bandage" to protect any wound as it heals. Hence, picking a scab off a wound before it is ready prolongs the healing process and increases chances of scarring.Even with the most careful treatment, however, acne scars can and will develop. Luckily, there are many various procedures that can help with avoiding acne scars and help avoid dire effects on one’s self-esteem, confidence, and overall quality of life due to the appearance of acne scarring.Target and immediately treat active acne lesions with some of these effective treatment plans that can improve skin texture and reduce acne scarring:• Chemical Peels: An acid-based solution is applied topically to either the entire face or just in areas of pitted scarring to remove the outer layer of skin and stimulate collagen repair. Multiple sessions are necessary to optimize results.• Laser Resurfacing: A fractional laser delivers pixelated columns of laser heat in a controlled and predictable manner to either heat the skin or to remove the skin to elicit scar remodeling. It is best to ask an expert about which laser would best fit your needs and lifestyle, as the number of recommended treatments and the amount of downtime involved often varies.• fillers: Injectable hyaluronic acid like Belotero, Juvederm or Restylane is injected into depressions in the skin from acne scarring to help smoothen out the skin texture. Since fillers are temporary, they will need to be done via multiple sessions to maximize scar repair.A consult with a board-certified cosmetic physician can determine how to customize numerous options for both you and your skin. To learn about more ways of avoiding acne scars or to schedule a consultation to discuss further options-- including various scar removal treatment plans-- contact Epione, one of the most comprehensive, state of the art laser and aesthetic surgery centers of its kind in the world specializing in the most current technology available for skin, hair, and body contouring. Cellulite

What Causes Cellulite?

If you’re battling the bulgy, dimpled lumps on your thighs, arms or stomach, you’re not alone. In fact, anyone can develop cellulite, the pesky condition in which the skin appears to have areas of underlying fatty deposits. Contrary to popular belief, cellulite is not associated to weight gain although it can make it more noticeable. Even very thin people can develop cellulite. But just what causes cellulite?

Common Causes of Cellulite

The causes of cellulite are not clearly defined, but there are several risk factors that have been put forth as explanation for what causes cellulite. Among these are:▪ Hormonal Factors- Hormones play an important role in cellulite development. Estrogen, insulin, noradrenaline, thyroid hormones and prolactin are part of the cellulite production process. When your bodies start producing less estrogen, it leads to poorer circulation, a decrease in new collagen production and the breakdown of older connective tissue.▪ Genetics- Certain genes are required for cellulite development. Genes may predispose an individual to particular characteristics associated with cellulite, such as gender, race and slow metabolism.▪ Diet- Poor nutrition can increase the likelihood of cellulite production. People who eat too much fat, carbohydrates, salt, or refined and processed foods are likely to have greater amounts of cellulite.▪ Dehydration- Not getting enough water can cause toxic buildup in the fat cells that’s difficult for the body to metabolize. Dehydration also causes thinner, weaker skin – and when skin is weakened, it has a much greater tendency to show cellulite. So, increasing your intake of water can aid your body in metabolizing fat, ridding itself of toxins and hiding cellulite via thicker, healthier skin.▪ Lifestyle- Cellulite may be more prevalent in smokers, those who do not exercise, and those who sit or stand in idle positions for long periods of time. If you’re chained to a desk all day, spend a portion of your day standing up at your desk or simply take small breaks to walk around the office.▪ Smoking Cigarettes- Cigarette smoke can reduce blood vessel flow and circulation, which weakens and disrupts the formation of collagen. This causes the connective tissue to stretch, weaken and become damaged more easily. As a result, more cellulite will show through.▪ Clothing- Clothing with tight elastic restricting blood flow may contribute to the formation of cellulite. Compression-style apparel may temporarily “suck it all in” but it won’t make a lasting change to the appearance of cellulite. In fact, tight fitting clothing can reverse the effect if they cut off circulation and limit blood circulation.▪ Lack of Muscle- Building up muscle will help decrease the appearance of cellulite.
